A one day course for administrators and support staff working in the public sector including health, social services, education, voluntary sector organisations.
This course addresses the impact of working with people in need or distress on those who are not seen to be in the ‘front line’. It is commonly understood that care professionals are affected by the emotional impact of the work they do. However, administrative and support staff are regularly exposed to their clients’ stories and play an important role in direct client work without recognition of their contribution and their ongoing support needs.
Administrative staff are also affected by secondary stress. Ongoing exposure to the trauma and pain of others affects us in different ways and can have an impact on our work and personal lives. Staff in support roles rarely have access to the support and supervision they need. This day gives an opportunity to learn more about the nature of secondary stress and the research that underpins it. There will be a focus on sharing experience with others and learning self-support strategies to avoid ongoing stress build-up.
